Barton Applications being accepted until August 5th

2013 John W. Barton Sr. Community Leadership Development
Program Now Accepting Applications
 
Baton Rouge, LA – Forum 35, a community of young men and women improving Baton Rouge, and
LANO, the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations, are now accepting applications for the 2013 John W. Barton Sr. Community Leadership Development Program.

Since 2004, Forum 35 and LANO have partnered to train young emerging leaders in nonprofit
governance and then match them with local nonprofit organizations for service on their Board of
Directors. The program is named in honor of John W. Barton Sr. in recognition of his support of Baton
Rouge's nonprofit sector for over 75 years, including his vision and commitment to developing new and
emerging leaders.

"The John W. Barton Sr. Community Leadership Development Program is one of the most active and
successful programs of its kind in the Baton Rouge area, and we are thrilled to open the application
process for this 10th year of training and developing the next wave of emerging leaders in our Greater
Baton Rouge community,” Forum 35 President Jesse Hoggard said. "Together with our partners at
LANO, we have seen hundreds graduate this program over the years and today, many of those serve in some of our local community’s most critical leadership positions. We look forward to building upon
these successes for yet another year as we continue our work to strengthen the foundation of young,
emerging leadership here Baton Rouge.”

of nonprofit organizations than competent volunteer board leadership, which is exactly what this
program is designed to build. The skills, knowledge, and tools that individual board members apply to
their role directly affect the good work of nonprofits, and we are pleased to be able to help grow this
subject matter and expertise across yet another group of emerging leaders in the Baton Rouge
community.”

Applications will be accepted at the Forum 35 website from July 15 to August 5. Individuals interested in
the program are encouraged to apply as early as possible in order to meet the application deadline.
Applications will be considered by a review committee comprised of Forum 35 and community stakeholders, with successful applicants notified of their selection for the 2013 program no later than
August 7. This committee will select up to 35 individuals for inclusion in this year’s program; however,
applicants not selected for this year’s program will be considered for subsequent years and interested
individuals need not re-apply.

The 2013 John W. Barton Sr. Community Leadership Development Program will kick off August 21 and
conclude in early October with volunteer matching and Board of Director placement between class
participants and area nonprofit organizations. Participants are required to attend the entirety of the
three-part training series and actively participate in each session. Training sessions, which will be held in Baton Rouge at the Louisiana Technology Park on Wednesdays from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m., will include a mix of instruction, panel discussions, and group activities. Upon completion of the training, participants will have the opportunity to meet with nonprofit Executive
Directors and Board members for potential placement on their organization’s Board of Directors or a
committee.
